For the past five years, Shree Vagad Graduates’ Association (SVGA) has been actively working with Divyang members of the community. To address their unique challenges, we formed the Shri Nathalal Valji Savla Divyang Support Group, comprising members from the community. While their problems are often diverse and unique, one common issue they face is low societal acceptance—be it in schools, neighborhoods, or even within their own families. This lack of acceptance is not only painful for Divyang individuals but also for their families.
To highlight these challenges and foster greater awareness, SVGA, in collaboration with a parents’ group named “Taare Zameen Pe”, decided to create a Gujarati Drama. The drama aimed to bring the struggles and experiences of Divyang individuals to the forefront, encouraging society to reflect and empathize. We organized 27 free shows across Mumbai and nearby areas, reaching a wide audience.
The drama featured a team of 21 actors, including 17 first-time performers and 4 actual Divyang members. To make the performance more impactful and realistic, we prepared 4 elaborate sets (unlike the usual 2), incorporated 35 lighting effects, and used 17 lapel microphones.
The response was overwhelming. The drama completed 27 houseful shows, with over 20,000 people experiencing and applauding the performance. The initiative successfully sparked conversations and raised awareness about the challenges faced by Divyang individuals.
We have recorded the entire drama and plan to release it on YouTube at an appropriate time, ensuring its message reaches an even wider audience for the benefit of society at large.
The Vardhaman Divyang Rehab Centre, located on the 6th floor of the Thane Sthanak, is managed by the Shree Thane Vardhaman Sthanakvashi Jain Shravak Sangh. Inspired by SVGA’s Nathalal Valji Savla Divyang Support Group, this center aims to empower and support Divyang individuals in Thane and surrounding areas.
The center provides a wide range of therapies under one roof, ensuring accessibility and affordability for those in need. By offering these essential services at reasonable costs, the Vardhaman Divyang Rehab Centre strives to enhance the quality of life for Divyang individuals and their families.
